Where do I start in my search for God? Does everyone have the same ultimate goal and purpose?

Proverbs is a good place to begin your search.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that each one of us must do our own study and not depend on someone else to do it for us. It is great to have a good teacher to help you get started. Just be sure that he or she is teaching the Word of God and not the traditions of men. Our walk with the Lord is a daily adventure, not once a week or when we feel like it.
